I just found out about some extra settings for my Glitch-soc/Mastodon @glitch.social instance!
- activated the "single-user mode" which means that the front-page of toot.cairobraga.com is now my profile instead of a login/registration screen;
- expanded my char limit per toot to 900;
- my poll options to 6;
- my poll option chars to 120;
- my bio chars to 600.
@yunohost admin/config web-UI was the one who made this all possible, except for the single-user mode thing, which I had to change manually using nano.
I've installed @Castopod on my brazilian shared hosting server, but it has a bug with the federation part of things that is not allowing the profile to be followed from other Fedi accounts, already reported by someone else here: https://code.castopod.org/adaures/castopod/-/issues/242
I will still publish an old podcast of mine there as a test, hoping this bug can be resolved soon because this whole podcasting+social networking in one great platform can be a game-changer in this new era of Podcasting 2.0 and can also make us less dependent of corporate social networks.
I started this narrative without giving some context so here we go: right now I have 2 remote servers I'm using to experiment with running my own webservices on the open internet. notice I am not a tech person, just a curious enthusiast who loves to experiment with tech.
the oldest one is a shared web hosting I've had for years on Hostgator Brasil which I originally rented to run my websites and podcasts. even though it is limited, it can still run a lot of cool things. right now it has my Joplin sync point, it's running 2 Wordpress websites (including 2 podcasts w/ PowerPress), Wallabag (Pocket alternative), Nextcloud (which I'm getting rid of), Baikal (Contacts & Calendar) and my new @Castopod experiment.
the newest one is a VPS on Time4VPS which I had for over a year. it's a modest but very capable server, in which I'm using @yunohost to run a URL shortener of my own using LSTU, a very experimental live video page using @owncast and this Mastodon instance using @glitch.social
ASAP I will be getting myself a #RaspberryPi 4B to experiment with onsite self-hosting with services such as @pixelfed, @peertube, Navidrome. I'm very excited to try that.
I just finished reviving my @wallabag server (Pocket alternative) and ended up installing a Shaarli instance as well, which is a (far superior) del.icio.us alternative (bookmarker).
in this process, I ended up accessing my long dormant delicious account and exporting my data from there to import on Shaarli. also imported some browser bookmarks and open tabs there and unread articles to Wallabag.
all of this to avoid having dozens of tabs open and to actually read the articles I wanna read. also to have those links accesible everywhere, of course.
oh, it's time to upgrade my #glitchsoc instance, powered by @yunohost, wish me luck! #SelfHostAdventures #SelfHosting #SelfHosted #SelfHost
16 Nov 2022, 18:56:43 [original]hey fedizens, how are things with y'all? I need your help: now that #RaspberryPi is dead, my plan of getting one to setup my self-hosting adventures locally is up in the air because I don't know viable alternatives of SBCs that can be bought in/from Portugal. do you have any tips/recommendations for me? thanks in advance!

it is now official: I bought a refurbished HP EliteDesk 800 G3 Mini to be my home server. got a nice xmas deal with a portuguese shop specialized in refurbs. but before I start playing with it I will make some changes:
- it comes with 8GB of RAM, but I will buy a 16G card as well, so I might end up with 12G or 24G;
- it comes with a 256GB 2.5" SATA SSD, but I am thinking of selling that and operating with only a 1TB M.2 NVME SSD;
- it comes with no WiFi, so I'm getting an Intel AX211 card, since I have a WiFi6 router and can't do an Ethernet connection at the moment.
I've also been researching on top of what I'm gonna run my server. for now I think I won't do YUNOHOST and go with Docker. but even then I have choices to make this whole thing easier: Portainer, CapRover, Umbrel, Tipi are the ones I already read about. any thoughts on that, fellow fedizens?
I wanna thank @joby @millihertz @steven for showing me the wondrous world of refurbished miniPCs/thin clients.
the adventure continues...
and we're back! my instance (and all my websites) was unreachable for a few days due to some DNS problems, but it's all good now
and yes, this happened as part of my #SelfHostAdventures, lol
OK, now my Mastodon instance is back for good! after some trial & errors, I successfully migrated from my YUNOHOST server at a remote VPS to a Docker container in my home server, thanks to the great people at LinuxServer.io: they now offer a glitch-soc flavour on their Mastodon docker image!
it was a long process learning how to migrate the database and files properly, I read a ton of guides, Q&As on many sites, spent weeks with my instance down, but now things seem good and well. let's hope they stay that way, hehehe.
5 Mar 2023, 20:00:46 [original]self-hosting and "growing your own services" (hi @homegrown ) is kinda addictive, hehehe...
26 Mar 2023, 15:42:27 [original]I am currently running 9 services/applications on my home server via docker containers (this mastodon instance is one of them). and, despite difficulties and problems always arising, I'm planning on adding some more... mwahahahahaha
I need help from the fedizens: it's been a while I migrated my mastodon instance from a VPS to my own home server, but I am having some problems, mainly pertaining to federation (I can't reach unknown accounts and servers when I search for them, making it virtually impossible to follow new people) and I simply cannot upload images or videos. on both cases an error message just slides in from the left saying "500" and nothing else.
I am running v4.1.2+glitch using the LinuxServer.io docker image. any help is appreciated, I'm at my wit's end with this. thanks!

12 May 2023, 20:09:54 [original]my mastodon instance can't show images from other people, doesn't let me upload images to my posts, can't search for accounts on the larger Fediverse and won't let me follow accounts on unknown servers. every action described above returns a 500 error. I need help, I don't know what to do. 😢😢😢 #Help #MastoHelp #SelfHost #SelfHosted #SelfHosting #Docker #FediHelp
14 Jun 2023, 02:23:53 [original]erm, why is my Home timeline showing me posts from accounts I am not following?
did I fuck up something else when I solved my permissions issue?
8 Jul 2023, 19:44:55 [original]I have been feeling very proud of self-hosting, lately. After my vacations I'm gonna try new things I've been musing about in that sense. 14-years-old me, who used to spend hours designing on Microsoft Front Page, is proud of 32-years-old me, I am sure.

I need help, fedizens.
first attempt to run my own @pixelfed instance on a Docker stack seemed successful, after many issues and resolutions to them. the stack is running, no errors on the logs of the containers. but when I access the URL on my browser, I get ERROR 500. when I access via the local IP and port, it opens the Pixelfed site, but on a "Sorry, this page isn't available" page.
I am honestly lost right now.

I am trying to make my @pixelfed #pixelfed instance work properly, but federation is broken. I am using the @pixelfedde_ci #docker image and operating behind a @cloudflare #cloudflare tunnel. can anyone help me, please?

14 Dec 2023, 03:32:54 [original]the problem with self-hosting is that now I wanna self-host EVERYTHING and my computing resources are not infinite, so I have to make choices, lol.
loving this experience and what it's bringing me.
OK, so Sonarr devs refuse to even add an option to use TMDB instead of TVDB for metadata source.
fedizens, do you have an alternative to Sonarr you'd suggest I use?
thanks in advance!
29 Oct 2024, 18:51:44 [original]upgrade went smoothly, now I'm running v4.0.1+glitch, thanks to @yunohost <3 #glitchsoc #SelfHostAdventures #SelfHosting #SelfHosted #SelfHost
