supporting the Mastodon project is really nice, for reals. but please prioritize your local server admin when it comes to donating money. or even a server that is not the one you're registered to.

@ruloleaks the difference resides on the rules and the local timeline of each server. it's really kinda like a neighbourhood: you can communicate and visit others freely, but people on your neighbourhood are "closer" to you and you all agreed to the same set of rules.

(unrelated: pay attention to your toots that are indicated as being in Spanish when they're actually in English)

@ruloleaks that part is your choice entirely. in that case, I suggest you choose a server based on the rules they have and if they defederated servers widely known to be toxic, hateful and/or plain illegal/criminal. I'd also recommend not choosing a big server as they tend to get off the rails when it comes to moderation and stability, resulting in them being defederated from a chunk of the Fediverse.

@ruloleaks hm, no. you are free to talk about whatever you want, UNLESS you are in a server that has a rule that might say otherwise, but those are rare and very specific.

the main reason people choose thematic servers is because they want to be closer to a community of people built around their shared interest in that theme. they might also do that because they MAINLY (BUT NOT ONLY) talk about that theme on their posts.

@ruloleaks the point of having an account in a server is data ownership. one of the main aspects of the fediverse is that you own your data, no one else does. so a distributed identity might not be feasible in that context. on the other hand, a nomadic identity can (an account that can be migrated from one server to another in its entirety), and it already exists in a Fediverse platform called Hubzilla.

friends who are on mastodon.social and mastodon.online, I suggest you migrate to a better, smaller instance. moderation has been shitty on those big servers for a while and a wave of defederation it's coming for them, by the looks of it.

status: doing some Fediblock maintenance on my instance, reading some great threads on this beautiful Fediverse, being sure of the decision to sunset my #birdsite accounts and getting ready to plan how to execute it, considering doing the exact same for my facebook account, realizing both are gonna have to be a 6-month to a year-long process, deeply sighing, feeling happy about it anyways.

@luka I wish I could simply deactivate today, but I need to find other ways of keeping in touch with a lot of people before I do that. same with facebook (although I've been logging into my fb acc once every 6 months for 5 years now, lol). it's fine, tho, it doesn't mean I'll use that the same way I did before until I leave it for good: this is my new home and I love it. ​

@errol it has to do with how federation works. I don't know the tech details, but it's the same logic as world maps on Age of Empires and Diablo: it shows you more as you touch new grounds.

@errol amplifying federation it's not totally based on following and the replies not appearing in their entirety it's not hiding: it is "not finding", which is actually different. it's meant to work like that to guarantee the organic element of the network and to make the discovery element of community literal and technical at the same time. (at least that's what I understood from the reading I did on the subject up to this point)

storage: I'm at 6G, and that's after I limited media retention to only 2 days. I'm gonna do a test of not opening my instance for 3 days and see what happens in that area.
